6th at Penn Theatre is a
nonprofit 49-seat house that has produced many award-winning
productions over the past few years under the executive
directorship of Dale Morris. Located in the heart of
Hillcrest, San Diego's "gay district," the theatre has been
described as "The busiest, big-hearted low-budget theatre in
San Diego" by Anne Marie Welsh, critic for the
Union-Tribune.
A look at some of our recent productions reveals the
diversity on our stage: Terra Nova, Anton in Show Business,
Glengarry Glen Ross, Come back to the Five and Dime Jimmy
Dean, Kiss of the Spider Woman, The Allergist's Wife, A Skull in Connemara.
One of the theatre's acclaimed accomplishments is our
series of Greek plays based on new translations. Another is
our human rights festival which debuted in 2007.
And one of our proudest accomplishments is that we have
premiered dozens of new plays by dozens of writers! We seek
new plays, because we make room for them. Challenge Theatre
is one of our programs for new plays: playwrights agree to
write a play complying with our challenge before
knowing what the challenge is. This always results in some
innovative work. (This program is limited to local
playwrights because of their necessary participation in
production.) (ChallengeTheatre.com)
We normally have something on stage every night of
the week! Our main productions play Thursday evening
through Sunday matinee and weeknight productions play
Sunday evening through Wednesday evening.
